Vice President Alupo Engages Iteso Cultural Leaders on Cattle Restocking Program
Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo has convened a high-level meeting with leaders of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) and other stakeholders at Eneku Village, Soroti, to deliberate on the forthcoming cattle re-stocking program.
The engagement comes in the wake of President Yoweri Museveni’s decision to suspend the previous compensation scheme, which had been marred by irregularities and inefficiencies. The President emphasized the need to design a new approach that directly benefits the people of Teso and other affected regions.
Speaking during the consultative session, Vice President Alupo underscored the importance of inclusivity and accountability in the new program. She noted that the dialogue with cultural and community leaders will serve as a foundation for establishing transparent mechanisms that guarantee fairness in the distribution of livestock.
“The President has directed that this program must not repeat the mistakes of the past. Our consultations with cultural leaders and other stakeholders will ensure that the cattle delivered are of good quality, and that the process is equitable. This initiative is about restoring livelihoods and dignity to the people of Teso,” Alupo remarked.
The Vice President also reiterated government’s commitment to improving the socio-economic well-being of communities that suffered historical cattle loss due to conflict and insecurity. She assured stakeholders that their views will shape the guidelines and implementation of the program, fostering trust and ownership.
The meeting attracted leaders from the Iteso Cultural Union, local government officials, and representatives from farmer groups, who welcomed the consultative approach as a step toward healing and rebuilding the region’s cattle economy.
The cattle re-stocking program is expected to directly benefit households across Teso, not only boosting food security and household income, but also preserving the cultural heritage of livestock-keeping in the sub-region.
