US Embassy Shuts Down Rumors of Ambassador’s Apology to Uganda
The U.S. Embassy in Uganda has firmly denied reports circulating on social media claiming that Ambassador William W. Popp apologized to the Ugandan government. The denial was issued on the afternoon of Monday, October 7, 2024.
In a brief statement, the Embassy stated, “This narrative is completely false. Neither the U.S. Embassy nor Ambassador Popp have received any formal request to apologize from the Ugandan government on any matter, nor has he apologized. All official statements are posted on our platforms.”
Earlier, social media was rife with claims that the Ambassador had apologized to President Yoweri Museveni after being given an ultimatum by the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter). General Muhoozi had warned the Ambassador to stop interfering in Uganda’s internal affairs, threatening deportation if an apology was not made within 24 hours.
However, General Muhoozi’s post has since been removed from X for reasons that remain unclear.
