Teso Farmers tipped on cassava variety choices

BY LYDIA ARYECHO:

Farmers in Teso Sub-region are being urged to be proactive in managing cassava pests and diseases in order to avoid losses.

This advice comes from Francis Nyeko, the Managing Director of Northern Farm Masters Uganda and Agricultural officer for Gulu district Local Government.

Nyeko highlighted the two most common diseases affecting cassava in the region as Cassava mosaic virus, cassava brown streak, and the white fly pest.

He emphasized the importance of choosing tolerant varieties such as NAROCASS 1 and 2, as well as NASE 14 and 19, which have been bred to withstand infestations.

In addition to selecting the right variety, Nyeko stressed the importance of avoiding planting cuttings from infected cassava plantations to prevent the spread of diseases.

It is crucial for farmers to be vigilant and take preventive measures to ensure their cassava crops remain healthy.

By following Nyeko’s advice and being proactive in managing cassava pests and diseases, farmers in Teso Sub-region can protect their crops and avoid significant losses.

This is essential for the livelihoods of many farmers in the region who rely on cassava as a staple crop.
