Soroti Catholic Diocese Confirms Inauguration Dates for New Parishes
The Soroti Catholic Diocese has officially confirmed the inauguration dates for two newly created parishes, a development that has sparked joy and anticipation among Christians across the region.
According to the Diocesan Communications Director, Rev. Fr. Marcel Ajoket, Bishop Joseph Oliach Eciru has approved the dates and appointed priests to shepherd the new parishes. He described the move as a milestone in the Dioceseās journey of growth, evangelization, and pastoral care.
Fr. Ajoket emphasized that the creation of the new parishes reflects the Bishopās vision of bringing the Church closer to the people. āThese new parishes are not only structures but living communities of faith. They will ensure that the faithful receive closer pastoral attention, more direct access to the sacraments, and spiritual formation,ā he said.
The first inauguration will take place on 20th September 2025 at St. Peter Julian Eymard Parish, Ogangai, with Rev. Fr. Joseph Eilu appointed as the pioneer parish priest. The parish, named after the patron saint of Eucharistic devotion, is expected to attract hundreds of Christians, clergy, and well-wishers for the historic celebration.
Ten days later, on 30th September 2025, the Diocese will inaugurate Mary Mother of Christians Parish, Otuboi, where Rev. Fr. Kalemba Auki will serve as the first parish priest. The name reflects the Dioceseās deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, honored as a model of faith and powerful intercessor for Christians.
The news has been warmly welcomed by the faithful, many of whom have long awaited these developments. Parishioners expressed gratitude to Bishop Eciru for his foresight and commitment to expanding the mission of the Church, especially in areas where long distances to existing parishes have challenged active participation in Church life.
Preparations for the inaugural ceremonies are already underway, with local committees mobilizing resources and working closely with diocesan officials to ensure successful celebrations. The events will feature Eucharistic liturgies, installation of parish priests, cultural expressions of joy, and fellowship among Christians.
The establishment of Ogangai and Otuboi parishes followed a careful process of consultation, planning, and evaluation of pastoral needs. Their creation underscores the Dioceseās commitment to the spiritual welfare of its people, ensuring that evangelization and pastoral outreach remain at the heart of its mission.
As Soroti Catholic Diocese looks ahead to these historic days, the faithful are invited to join in prayer, thanksgiving, and celebration. The birth of St. Peter Julian Eymard Parish in Ogangai and Mary Mother of Christians Parish in Otuboi marks another chapter in the Dioceseās growthāan enduring witness to faith, unity, and the expanding mission of the Church in Teso and beyond.
