Six Dead, Five Critically Injured in Kampala-Gulu Highway Crash
Tragic Collision on Kampala-Gulu Highway Claims Six Lives
In a devastating accident on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, at least six people have lost their lives, and five others are critically injured following a head-on collision between a commuter taxi and a Fuso truck. The crash occurred around 3 PM in Sinalya, near Bombo, involving a Toyota Hiace and a Fuso Fighter truck.
Savanah Region Police spokesperson Sam Twinnaemazima attributed the accident to reckless driving. He reported that the Fuso driver, whose vehicle had the registration number UBN 052L, was overtaking dangerously when the collision with the Hiace, registered as UBL 502Z, took place. The Fuso driver fled the scene, and his identity remains unknown.
Among the deceased was the taxi driver, and two passengers were identified: Rogers Mfitumukiza from Gakoro Village in Kisoro District and Charles Opirisa, an employee of the Ministry of Works residing in Banda, Nakawa Division, Kampala. Other victims included Joshua Ebong, Efrayimu Mugerwa from Kawala, a man only known as Kato, and an unidentified female adult.
Injured victims were promptly transported to General Military Hospital in Bombo for urgent medical care, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Luwero Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Police are investigating the incident and are appealing for information regarding the Fuso driver’s whereabouts. Authorities have also urged drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies. The Kampala-Gulu highway, one of Uganda’s busiest routes, has a troubling history of accidents, often linked to reckless driving and unsafe overtaking practices.
