As the political term in Sironko comes to a close, political leaders have turned their focus to demanding accountability from technocrats, amid growing public frustration over the neglected road infrastructure and suspected misuse of public funds. This shift in focus is taking place against the backdrop of increasing dissatisfaction among farmers, traders, and commuters, who are struggling with deteriorating roads that have only worsened their already difficult daily lives.
The condition of the roads has become a significant issue in Sironko, with many locals feeling abandoned as they contend with poor infrastructure. The lack of maintenance and development has not only disrupted transportation but also negatively impacted the livelihoods of residents who depend on efficient road networks for trade, agriculture, and commuting. As a result, the local population has expressed their frustration, and their patience is running thin.
In response to this growing concern, a district-wide joint monitoring exercise was launched, led by Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Member of Parliament for Budadiri West and the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Secretary General. Mafabi, accompanied by MPs, local leaders, security officials, and technocrats, set out on a mission to assess the progress of road projects and verify the accuracy of project reports. This initiative was an effort to ensure transparency and address the concerns of the public by checking whether funds allocated for road development had been used appropriately.
The findings of the monitoring exercise indicated that out of the six roads and two bridges planned under the one-billion-shilling project, only three roads and two bridges had been completed. Despite this partial completion, Nelson Kirenda, the Sironko District Chief Administrative Officer, acknowledged the delays in the project but attributed them to issues such as equipment breakdowns and adverse weather conditions. While these factors have certainly contributed to the delays, the public remains wary and is calling for greater accountability and more timely progress on infrastructure development.
The ongoing scrutiny of this situation reflects the community’s determination to ensure that funds are utilized efficiently and that the necessary improvements are made to the road infrastructure, which remains a critical need for the residents of Sironko.
