Shs. 6.3 Billion Regional Blood Bank Commissioned in Soroti
A modern blood bank facility worth Shs. 6.3 billion has been commissioned in Soroti City, marking a major boost for healthcare services in Eastern Uganda. The facility, located at Arapai, was officially launched this afternoon by the Vice President, Retired Maj. Jessica Alupo Epel.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alupo emphasized the need for accountability in the health sector, warning against corruption in the handling of blood. She reminded health workers and leaders that blood is donated freely by citizens and must be distributed fairly to save lives.
“Blood is free, and all Ugandan lives matter equally. We must ensure zero tolerance to corruption,” Alupo said.
The Vice President credited the milestone to President Yoweri Museveni’s vision of transforming Uganda into a middle-income economy with healthy and productive citizens.
Martha Ajilong, the Manager of the new Soroti Regional Blood Bank, recalled the challenges health facilities previously faced before its establishment. She explained that blood samples had to be transported to Mbale Regional Blood Bank for screening, a process that often delayed transfusions and endangered patients in urgent need.
“This facility, whose construction began in 2021, will now serve numerous health centers and hospitals across the region and beyond. It is a relief to both health workers and patients,” Ajilong noted.
Engineer George Otim, the Commissioner for Health Services in the Ministry of Health, explained that the project covered both construction and full equipping of the blood bank to meet modern standards. He assured the public that the facility is ready to provide reliable blood screening, storage, and distribution services.
The commissioning of the Soroti Regional Blood Bank is expected to greatly reduce delays, improve emergency response, and enhance overall healthcare delivery in Eastern Uganda
