Protests Erupt in Mbarara Over Delayed Renovation of Katete Bridge
Tensions flared in Mbarara City this morning as frustrated residents confronted police during a protest over the prolonged delay in the renovation of Katete Bridge.
The demonstration, sparked by growing discontent over the bridge’s deteriorating condition, escalated when police resorted to firing warning shots to disperse the crowd, which had gathered to demand immediate action on the overdue repairs. The delay has severely impacted daily life in the area, with residents expressing anger over the lack of progress despite repeated promises from city authorities.
“We have been waiting for months, and our businesses are suffering,” said one resident. “Every time they say the repairs will start soon, but we haven’t seen anything. We’re tired of waiting,” added another resident, Asuman Tumusime.
The bridge, a vital link in the city, has been out of service for vehicles for an extended period, affecting transport and local trade. Currently, only pedestrians and motorcycles can use this route.
Amina Naluyima, the communications officer for Mbarara City, reassured the public that the UPDF Engineers Brigade would begin work shortly. “All the processes are complete, and work on the bridge will start soon,” she stated, adding, “We understand the frustration, but rest assured, the project will commence in the coming days.” Despite her assurances, tensions remain high as residents await visible progress.
