BY EDUNYU SAM

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and war cattle compensation claimants in the Teso Sub-region have reached an agreement on a uniform compensation plan for all beneficiaries in the area.

The resolution was made during a meeting with Teso cattle claimants convened by President Museveni at Soroti University to assess the progress of the ongoing cattle compensation initiative.

Since 2022, the government has paid a total of 159 billion shillings to 28,000 claimants out of 52,790 registered beneficiaries, following the launch of the initiative by President Museveni.

The President emphasized that compensating for cattle lost in war is a complex issue, as war itself is a disaster that transcends limits.

Nonetheless, the government has committed to providing compensation as part of a broader rehabilitation effort aimed at restoring development and alleviating the hardships caused by the leadership crises of the 1970s and 1980s.

President Museveni announced that a flat-rate payment will be established for all households affected by cattle wrestlers and war-related cattle losses, excluding those who have already received payments under the current arrangement.

He tasked Vice President Jesca Alupo with leading discussions with local leaders and residents in Teso to compile accurate lists of genuine beneficiaries.

Additionally,  The president has backed the idea of public display of cattle compensation beneficiaries lists in all the eleven districts in Teso sub region because some claimants have been paid but dishonestly deny receipt of funds.

The idea was pitched by the Deputy Attorney general Jackson Kafuuzi who confirmed payment of thousands of cattle compensation claimants.
