Over 1,000 Farmers Attend Agricultural Expedition at Busitema University
Busitema University, Arapai Campus, played host to a highly successful Agricultural Expedition over the weekend, drawing more than 1,000 farmers from across the region.
The three-day expo, organized by the East Africa Grain Council (EAGC) in partnership with Busitema University and Danida Green Business, served as a platform to connect farmers, input dealers, agribusiness experts, and researchers. The event focused on knowledge exchange, market linkages, and sustainable trade opportunities within Uganda’s agricultural sector.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, David Mutazimbwa, Chairman of the EAGC Board, confirmed the turnout and emphasized the council’s commitment to strengthening Uganda’s food systems.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Busitema University, Arapai branch, Prof. Saphina Biira, who presided as the Guest of Honour, encouraged farmers to actively participate in such initiatives, noting that they are critical for transforming agricultural practices and improving productivity.
Meanwhile, Paul Ochuna, EAGC’s Country Programs Manager, revealed that the council is deepening its partnership with the university to ensure farmers and students are continually exposed to modern agricultural innovations. He added that plans are underway to stage a larger expo at the same venue, bringing on board additional partners, including SOCADIDO.
Participants hailed the event as a life-changing experience. Paul Angura, a farmer who attended, shared that the knowledge gained during the expedition will help him scale up his production and adopt more efficient farming practices.
The Agricultural Expedition reaffirmed Busitema University’s role as a hub for agricultural research and farmer engagement, while also strengthening EAGC’s mission of building resilient food systems and improving market access across the regions
