NFA to Launch Afforestation Efforts in Soroti City
The National Forestry Authority (NFA) is set to initiate a major afforestation project in Soroti City, beginning in March this year. This move aims to increase the city’s green spaces and contribute to its overall environmental health. The afforestation effort will focus on planting trees in all of Soroti City’s forests, ensuring a more sustainable and beautiful urban landscape.
Nazipher Abigaba, the Forest Supervisor under NFA, revealed that the project is part of a broader beautification program being rolled out this year. The goal is not only to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Soroti but also to create a healthier urban environment. The newly planted trees are expected to provide numerous benefits to the community, including shading areas during hot, sunny days, improving air quality, and helping to prevent soil erosion during the rainy season.
Joseph Otim, the NFA Sector Manager responsible for the Teso Sub-Region, expressed concerns over the encroachment of forest land in the area. He urged the public to respect the designated forest boundaries and avoid illegal activities that could hinder the afforestation process. Otim emphasized the importance of voluntary evacuation for those who may have encroached on forest land, as the NFA prepares to begin its tree planting efforts in March. This request aims to ensure the successful implementation of the project and safeguard the long-term sustainability of the city’s green spaces.
The NFA’s initiative is part of Uganda’s ongoing efforts to combat deforestation and promote sustainable environmental management. By involving local communities and encouraging responsible use of natural resources, the afforestation project is expected to foster a greater sense of environmental stewardship in Soroti City.
