Museveni launches inaugural security expo 2024
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially opened the first Kampala Defence and Security Expo 2024, an event organised by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The expo was dedicated to the memory of the former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Minister of Home Affairs, the late General Aronda Nyakairima, who passed away in 2015.

The expo, held at the Munyonyo Conference Resort, brought together key military officials, defence contractors and security experts. The President was received by a high-level delegation including current CDF generals. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Minister of Veterans Affairs Huda Orel Abasong and other senior UPDF officials.
During the event, Museveni toured several stalls displaying a wide range of defence and security equipment. Many of these were provided by the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the UPDF.
The NEC has played a central role in developing regional defence capabilities. Participants unveiled innovations that will enhance self-sufficiency in the country’s defence production.
In his speech, President Museveni stressed the need for a strong military not just for Uganda but for the entire East African region.
He reiterated the importance of building a strong and self-sufficient military that can defend the country and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
“A strong military is essential for the defence of the country and the region,” Museveni said. “The security of East Africa should be our priority and we must work together as a region to ensure we are prepared for any external threat.” This will improve the country’s capacity to produce military equipment domestically.
He noted that this will reduce dependency on foreign suppliers and create jobs in Uganda, thereby strengthening the country’s economy.
Expo 2024 was held in honour of the late General Aronda Nyakairima, who served as Uganda’s longest serving Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for 10 years. A respected military leader, General Aronda played a key role in the formation of the UPDF during his tenure and later served as Minister of Interior until his untimely death in 2015.
His contributions in strengthening Uganda’s defence infrastructure and contributions to national security were recognised during the event.
Many speakers, including President Museveni, used the occasion to reflect on his unwavering commitment to service and his role in transforming the UPDF into a professional and disciplined force.
The Kampala Defence and Security Expo is set to become an annual event as well as a celebration of General Aronda’s memory. ARONDA’s contribution will also serve as a platform for defense and security stakeholders to exchange knowledge, innovations and advancements. The expo will run for 10 days and feature a range of exhibitions and forums providing an opportunity for local and international defense companies to interact, explore partnerships and share best practices in modern security and defense management.
