Katakwi Catholic Community Holds Spiritual Cleansing Prayers to Combat Abela Road Tragedies

The Catholic community in Katakwi District gathered today for special prayers at the notorious Abela stretch along the Soroti-Moroto road, a site known for frequent road accidents. In response to the ongoing tragedies, church leaders organized the prayer event, hoping to bring peace and protection to the area.
This initiative follows a directive from the Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Eciru Oliach, who called for a special mass at Abela after multiple fatal accidents. On September 9, 2024, the bishop instructed priests in Katakwi District to lead the faithful in prayers to “cleanse” the road and seek God’s protection for travelers.
The bishop’s call came after a particularly tragic incident that claimed two lives and left several women injured as they returned from the annual Diocesan conference. This, along with numerous other accidents over recent months, has left the community in grief and shock.

Bishop Eciru emphasized the need for spiritual intervention alongside physical safety measures, calling the repeated loss of life both a human and spiritual crisis. “We believe that through prayer, we can achieve spiritual cleansing and protection for those who use this road. The number of fatalities is alarming, and we must seek both physical precautions and God’s mercy to prevent further tragedies,” the bishop stated.
Rev. Fr. Patrick Achedu of Katakwi Deanery had initially raised concerns over the rising number of accidents at Abela, which have significantly increased over the past six months, leaving the community devastated. Fr. Achedu urged the organization of prayers to seek divine intervention for the protection of travelers.
“People are scared of this stretch. Many avoid it due to the number of lives lost. Our community feels that something spiritual may be contributing to these tragedies, and we are seeking God’s help,” Fr. Achedu remarked. “We hope these prayers will drive away any forces responsible for these accidents and restore peace and safety.”
Hundreds of local residents, clergy, and church leaders attended today’s prayer session, led by Fr. Achedu and priests from nearby parishes. The participants prayed fervently for protection and an end to the deadly accidents in Abela. The clergy also sprinkled holy water along the road as a symbolic act of “cleansing,” asking for divine protection for all who travel there. Hymns were sung, and prayers were offered in hopes of ending the ongoing tragedies.
