Karamojong Herdsmen Call for Peace After Torchering Houses
Karamojong herdsmen who are believed to have set fire to over 700 houses in Osep and Oedepus parishes in Ngariam Sub County, Katakwi District, have called for peace and peaceful coexistence with the Iteso community. The herdsmen expressed their desire to resolve tensions and rebuild relationships in the wake of the destruction caused by the incidents.
Simon Peter Akiyo, a resident of Sakale village in Nabilatuk District, took the initiative to apologize on behalf of the herdsmen during a meeting with the Iteso community. He requested that both the Karamojong and Iteso people stop engaging in unnecessary conflicts that have disrupted their peaceful coexistence. Akiyo openly acknowledged that the herdsmen had entered Teso grazing grounds without proper permission and apologized for the illegal actions. He further emphasized that they have already communicated with their leaders and are now seeking permission letters to ensure that future grazing activities are conducted peacefully and with mutual respect between the two communities.
During the meeting, Teko Kalakasi Nakiyakou, another Karamojong herdsman from Napak, expressed readiness to address any issues regarding cattle theft in Ngariam, signaling a commitment to protecting livestock and maintaining order in the area. “We are ready to take action against any cattle theft in Ngariam,” Nakiyakou stated, underlining the seriousness of their resolve to prevent further conflicts.
Moses Iteit, the LC3 Chairperson of Ngariam Sub County, confirmed that the Karamojong herdsmen grazing in the two parishes without the necessary permission letters have been instructed to vacate the area. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules set by local authorities to maintain peace and order. “Those without the required documents will be asked to leave,” Iteit said, highlighting the sub-county’s commitment to addressing the situation.
The call for peaceful coexistence comes at a time when tensions between the Karamojong and Iteso communities have been high, but these efforts are seen as a positive step toward restoring peace in the region.
