Jacob Markson Oboth-Oboth has been duly elected as the Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament after securing a commanding 414 votes in a highly contested speakership race held at Parliament.
The overwhelming victory cements Oboth-Oboth’s position as one of the country’s most influential political figures and signals strong confidence from Members of Parliament across the political divide.
In the same race, Norbert Mao, who also serves as the president of the Democratic Party (DP), managed to secure 15 votes, while Laro Peche received minimal support in the tightly watched election.
The election attracted national attention, with political observers describing Oboth-Oboth’s landslide victory as a reflection of the growing trust and support he commands within Parliament. His leadership is expected to shape the direction of Uganda’s legislative agenda during the 12th Parliament.
Following the announcement of the results, jubilations erupted among his supporters both inside and outside Parliament, with many describing the outcome as a victory for unity, experience, and strategic leadership.
As Speaker, Oboth-Oboth will now preside over parliamentary proceedings, guide legislative debates, and play a critical role in ensuring order and effective governance within the House. Political analysts believe his tenure could significantly influence Uganda’s political landscape in the coming years.
