Israel has undertaken significant air strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, claiming to have targeted over 100 rocket launchers and various other “terrorist sites,” including a weapons storage facility. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that these launchers were primed for action against Israel, though it remains unclear if there were any casualties from the strikes.

According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, at least 52 air strikes were recorded in southern Lebanon on Thursday evening. In a reciprocal move, Lebanon also launched strikes on military sites in northern Israel, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

The Israeli airstrikes, which lasted for more than two hours, represent some of the most intense military actions in the recent conflict. In the early hours of Friday, Israel lifted movement restrictions it had previously imposed on communities in the Golan Heights and parts of northern Israel, as confirmed by military sources.

Earlier in the week, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah characterized earlier explosions that occurred in Lebanon as crossing “all red lines,” accusing Israel of declaring war through its actions. These explosions, attributed to a series of coordinated attacks on pagers and walkie-talkies, resulted in 37 fatalities and approximately 3,000 injuries, according to Lebanese authorities. Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for these attacks.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has indicated that Israel is entering a “new phase of the war,” with a heightened focus on operations in the north. The cross-border tensions escalated significantly on October 8, 2023, the day after Hamas conducted an unprecedented attack on Israel from Gaza, leading Hezbollah to target Israeli positions in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians.

Since the onset of these hostilities, the toll has been severe, with hundreds of casualties reported, predominantly among Hezbollah fighters. This uptick in violence has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of residents on both sides of the border.

Hezbollah has openly stated that its actions are in support of Hamas, with both groups receiving backing from Iran and classified as terrorist organizations by Israel, the UK, and other nations. The IDF detailed in a statement that its recent operations involved striking around 100 launchers and other infrastructure, which consisted of approximately 1,000 barrels that were readied for imminent use against Israeli territory.

“The IDF will continue to operate to degrade the Hezbollah terrorist organization’s infrastructure and capabilities to defend the state of Israel,” the statement read. Lebanese security sources have noted that these airstrikes are among the most intense since the conflict in Gaza began last year.

In response to the escalating situation, the IDF has urged residents near the Lebanese border in northern Israel to avoid large gatherings and remain close to bomb shelters. Tensions continued on Thursday, as Hezbollah fighters fired two anti-tank missiles into Israel, followed by drone incursions. Reports indicated that two Israeli soldiers were killed, and another was seriously injured during these exchanges.

In a televised address, Hassan Nasrallah condemned the Israeli airstrikes as a major aggression against Lebanon. He declared that the attacks represented a severe violation of rules and norms, describing them as potential “war crimes.” Nasrallah emphasized the enormity of the blows dealt to his group but maintained that Hezbollah’s operational capabilities remained intact.

While vowing retribution, he suggested that Hezbollah was not inclined to escalate the conflict further unless a ceasefire in Gaza was achieved. He stated that cross-border attacks would persist until there were no more killings or assassinations impacting residents in northern Israel.

The IDF’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, recently completed the approval of plans concerning the northern front. Gallant elaborated that this new phase of the war presents both significant opportunities and risks, suggesting that Hezbollah perceives itself as under siege and that military actions will continue.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged restraint from all parties involved, emphasizing the importance of avoiding actions that could complicate efforts toward achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. Similarly, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, attending discussions in Paris, called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

“We all want to see a negotiated political settlement so that Israelis can return to their homes in northern Israel, and indeed Lebanese can return to theirs,” Lammy stated, highlighting the urgency of a diplomatic resolution in light of the escalating violence.

As the situation remains fluid, the international community is closely monitoring developments, with the potential for further escalation posing significant risks for both Israeli and Lebanese civilians.
