FDC Picks Nandala Mafabi as Flag Bearer for 2026 Presidential Race

KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has officially endorsed Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections. The announcement was made following a series of internal party deliberations and reconciliation efforts led by senior leaders and party elders.

This development marks a significant shift in the party’s strategy as it seeks to reassert its position as Uganda’s leading opposition force. The decision comes after the withdrawal of FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat from the race, a move widely seen as a show of unity and a gesture to pave the way for Mafabi’s candidacy.

Amuriat, who has served as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2021 elections, will now turn his political focus to Kumi District, where he will contest for the Kanyumu County parliamentary seat.

Party insiders say the agreement was reached after weeks of consultations aimed at resolving internal differences and presenting a unified front ahead of the highly anticipated elections.

Mafabi, the current Budadiri West MP and a veteran in Ugandan opposition politics, is known for his strong stance on accountability and governance. His nomination is expected to re-energize FDC’s base, particularly in the eastern region where he commands significant support.

Analysts believe that Mafabi’s candidacy could reshape the political landscape, as the FDC aims to consolidate support against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and other emerging opposition formations.

The party is expected to officially launch Mafabi’s campaign in the coming months as the 2026 electoral calendar gains momentum.
