Farmers and Churches in Teso Sub-Region Urged to Team Up for Cassava Commercialization
In an effort to improve the livelihoods of farmers in Teso Sub-Region, farmers and churches are being encouraged to collaborate in groups to participate in the marketing and benefits of cassava commercialization and industrialization.
This call was made by Father Mathew Okon Lagoro, a priest from Gulu Archdiocese, during a workshop on Cassava organized by Soroti Catholic Diocese at Eneku Village on the 22nd March.
Father Okon Lagoro highlighted that many farmers often face challenges with the market for their cassava produce.

However, by organizing themselves in groups, particularly through the church, they can access a ready market by engaging with existing cassava factories.
He cited the successful partnership between Bukona Agro-processors limited in the Acholi region and the Gulu Archdiocese, which has been running a cassava project for the past five years.
Through this collaboration, the factory transitioned from manufacturing sachet packed alcohol to producing ethanal oil from cassava, which is used for cooking purposes.
This transformative initiative not only benefits the farmers by providing a stable market for their cassava produce but also contributes to the local economy and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.
The partnership between farmers, churches, and cassava processing companies underscores the potential for inclusive growth and development in Teso Sub-Region.
By joining hands and working together, stakeholders can create a thriving cassava industry that benefits both producers and consumers, while contributing to the overall growth of the agricultural sector in the region.
