Catholic Church in Lwengo Compares Graft Suspect MP Namujju to Jesus

Residents of Lwengo congregated at St. Jude Catholic Church in Kyazanga Town for a thanksgiving service celebrating the release of their Member of Parliament, Cissy Namujju.

Namujju, who spent 55 days on remand due to corruption charges before being granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Court, was welcomed with heartfelt support from her constituents. During the ceremony, she reflected on her time in jail, describing it as an unexpected period of personal growth. “Being behind bars has taught me valuable lessons,” she shared.

“Despite my wealth, it couldn’t protect me from imprisonment. This is a lesson I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” Namujju added.

Her warm reception came after presidential advisor Justine Nameere made a last-minute attempt to block the celebrations, citing concerns about the event’s impact on the fight against corruption. Last week, Nameere wrote to State House requesting that Namujju’s thanksgiving be halted, claiming it “glorifies corruption” and shows a lack of remorse.

Though Namujju has remained largely silent about the details of her case since her release, her comments during the thanksgiving service provided insight into her reflections.

In a surprising revelation, she stated that her experiences in jail felt surreal, as if she had been dreaming about them beforehand. “I have been dreaming about these events before they happened,” she disclosed.

The thanksgiving event also saw the presence of notable figures, including Pamela Nyasiyo, the Woman MP for Budaka, who, alongside other MPs, expressed gratitude to Lwengo residents for their steadfast support. “The solidarity shown by the people of Lwengo during MP Namujju’s imprisonment is truly commendable,” Nyasiyo remarked.

Rev. Fr. Nsamba Gonzaga, representing Masaka Diocese Bishop Seruverus Jumba, addressed the gathering, encouraging attendees to draw inspiration from Namujju’s resilience. “The courage shown by Namujju in the face of adversity can be likened to the perseverance of Jesus Christ during his crucifixion,” Fr. Gonzaga stated.

Local residents praised Namujju for her charitable contributions to the community. “Namujju has funded numerous projects in Lwengo. To us, she is a hero,” one resident proclaimed.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among also recognized Namujju’s generosity. “It’s admirable to have a public servant who shares her resources with her people,” Among noted.

After the church service, representatives from various faith communities, including Muslims, Born-Again Christians, and Anglicans, participated in a multi-faith prayer session at Namujju’s parents’ home in Kabukye. The interfaith gathering highlighted the extensive support and solidarity Namujju receives from across the community.
