Casting into the Deep: Fr. Ajoket’s Call to Youth at Soroti Deanery Conference
On the third day of the Soroti Deanery Youth Annual Conference, Rev. Fr. Marcel Ajoket—Parish Priest of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Parish, Dakabela, and Director of Communications for Soroti Catholic Diocese—delivered a thought-provoking homily that left hundreds of young believers challenged, uplifted, and spiritually awakened.
Preaching during Mass at Dakabela, Fr. Ajoket called on Christians, especially the youth, to resist the temptation of witchcraft and superstition, which he described as a return to “the very darkness Christ already defeated.” He reminded the congregation that salvation in Jesus is not partial but a complete liberation from every chain of fear and false belief.
“If you are still going to the witch doctor, it means you are in the domain of darkness,” he warned, urging the faithful never to compromise their trust in Christ.
His words struck a chord with the youth, many of whom face cultural pressures to seek quick fixes for life’s struggles. The priest cautioned that such practices weaken faith and rob young Christians of the lasting joy that only God provides.
“The cross of Christ is enough,” he said firmly. “Going back to witchcraft is like walking back into shadows after being handed the light.”
Fr. Ajoket also turned his attention to another modern challenge—the obsession with quick riches. He spoke passionately against gambling, corruption, and shortcuts, describing them as empty promises that lead only to frustration and despair.
“My dear youth, do not waste your energy chasing quick money,” he urged. “Work hard, pray, and trust in God. What comes from Him lasts and brings true fulfillment.”
Drawing on Scripture, he recalled the story of Simon Peter, who after a long night of failure, obeyed Christ’s command to cast his nets into the deep waters—and was rewarded with an overwhelming catch.
“Like Simon Peter, I invite you to throw your nets into the deep during this conference,” Fr. Ajoket said. “If you listen to God’s voice, you too will catch your ‘big fish’—the blessings, wisdom, and purpose He has prepared for you.”
He explained that this “big fish” symbolizes more than material success. It is the discovery of God’s plan, strength, and grace that come only through faith, obedience, and perseverance.
The Soroti Deanery Youth Conference, held annually, draws young Catholics from across the region for prayer, learning, and fellowship. This year’s gathering in Dakabela has been marked by spirited liturgies, workshops, and cultural expressions that celebrate both faith and identity.
Fr. Ajoket reminded the youth of their pivotal role in the Church:
“You are the strength and energy of the Church. If you stay rooted in Christ, you will shine like lights in the world and lead others into the deep where the big fish await.”
As the conference entered its closing days, his message of “casting into the deep” became a central point of reflection. Many young people left with renewed resolve—to work diligently, trust God fully, and remain faithful despite the trials of life.
