BUDAKA: Flood Waters Kill Bugwere High Student in Rice Garden

BUDAKA

Shock and grief engulfed Budaka district on Sunday, 24th November 2024, following the tragic death of a Bugwere High School student who drowned in a rice garden located in a swamp.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Noah Kamba, a Senior Five student at Bugwere High School in Budaka district.

Kamba, a resident of Wekamba Cell in Naboa Town Council, had reportedly gone to the swamp to plant rice when the weather took a dangerous turn.

According to Moses Kityo Mwanga, the Bukedi North Police Commander, heavy rains started suddenly, leading to flooding in the swamp. The rising floodwaters overwhelmed Kamba, leaving him unable to escape to safety.

“Kamba drowned in the floodwater because there was no one to help him,” said Kityo. He explained that the young man found himself in a desperate situation, and the lack of assistance at the crucial moment resulted in the loss of his life.

Police officers acted swiftly to recover Kamba’s body from the floodwaters after being alerted to the tragic incident.

The body was later transported to Mbale Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death, as is standard procedure in such cases.

The sudden and heartbreaking loss of Kamba has left his family, friends, and school community devastated. Bugwere High School has described him as a dedicated student with great potential, whose life was tragically cut short by natural forces.

This incident also highlights the risks associated with unpredictable weather patterns, particularly in swampy or low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. Heavy rains can cause water levels to rise dangerously within minutes, posing a threat to anyone in their path.

Authorities are urging community members to exercise caution during the rainy season and to avoid working or traveling in flood-prone zones. They emphasize the importance of safety awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Kamba’s untimely death serves as a somber reminder of the power of nature and the need for vigilance in rural areas where resources for emergency response are often limited.
