BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV Appoints Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo as Apostolic Administrator of Jinja Diocese

Jinja, Uganda — October 29, 2025:

His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo, the Archbishop of Tororo, as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Jinja, following the passing of Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, who had served as the diocesan bishop until his death on October 22, 2025.

Bishop Wamika, remembered for his pastoral dedication and contribution to the Catholic Church in Uganda, was laid to rest on October 28, 2025, at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala, during a solemn ceremony attended by bishops, clergy, religious men and women, and thousands of faithful from across the country.

Archbishop Obbo’s appointment comes as the Vatican ensures pastoral continuity and guidance for the Jinja Diocese during this transitional period. As Apostolic Administrator, Archbishop Obbo will oversee the spiritual and administrative affairs of the diocese until a new bishop is appointed.

The Catholic community in the Diocese of Jinja has expressed gratitude to the Holy Father for the timely appointment, which provides hope and stability to the faithful mourning the loss of their shepherd.

The late Bishop Wamika was widely recognized for his humility, commitment to education, and steadfast defense of Catholic values throughout his episcopate. His passing marks the end of a deeply impactful chapter in the life of the Church in eastern Uganda.
