Anita Among to Lead ‘Run for the Blind’ Fundraiser for 10,000 White Canes

Kampala – Speaker of Parliament Anita Among will spearhead a significant fundraising marathon aimed at providing 10,000 white canes for the visually impaired. The “Run for the Blind” event is scheduled for November 17, coinciding with International White Cane Day, as announced by State Minister for Disability Affairs, Hellen Grace Asamo.

Minister Asamo highlighted the importance of this initiative, which seeks to raise awareness about the rights and needs of individuals with visual impairments. “The national theme for this year, ‘A White Cane for Every Blind Person,’ reflects our dedication to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for all Ugandans,” she stated.

The marathon will kick off at 6 AM from Kati Kati Grounds in Lugogo, promoting the use of white canes as essential mobility aids and encouraging public engagement in enhancing accessibility for persons with disabilities. The event will culminate in a closing ceremony at 10 PM, featuring Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja as the Chief Guest.

Minister Asamo called on Ugandans to support this noble cause, emphasizing the need to dismantle barriers faced by the visually impaired. “Many individuals with blindness find it challenging to access essential services like education and healthcare. This event is vital for raising awareness and funding for their needs,” she remarked.

White canes play a crucial role in promoting independence and safety for visually impaired individuals. “The white cane is more than just a symbol; it is a crucial tool that empowers individuals to navigate their surroundings confidently,” she added.

Fundraising Initiatives

Participants can register for the marathon using the MTN MoMo Code 710075 or Airtel Pay Code 4370414, with a registration fee of Shs25,000. Donations can also be made through UBA Bank, A/C 0103017389, under the Uganda National Association of the Blind. All proceeds will be dedicated to acquiring the much-needed white canes.

Minister Asamo noted that Uganda has made significant strides in disability inclusion, having ratified key international agreements like the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the African Union Protocol on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. “Uganda was one of the first countries to ratify the CRPD, and we’ve since amended national policies to align with these international standards,” she explained.

The government has also established 37 special primary schools and 20 secondary schools for children with visual impairments, ensuring access to quality education. Furthermore, there are special quotas for students with disabilities in public universities.

Minister Asamo emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access, employment opportunities, and social inclusion for persons with disabilities. “For the first time, we now have a visually impaired magistrate serving in the judiciary, along with several officials in various ministries,” she noted.

As the marathon approaches, Minister Asamo urged all Ugandans to participate actively. “Together, we can ensure that no person with visual impairment is left behind. A white cane for every blind person is not just a dream; it is our collective responsibility,” she stated.

This event represents a significant advancement in promoting the rights and inclusion of persons with visual impairments in Uganda, aiming to foster a more equitable society for all through community support and collaboration.
