Amuria District Faces Health Facility and Staffing Challenges

Amuria District is currently grappling with a significant shortage of health facilities, despite the mandate for every sub-county to have a Health Center III.

The district, which is home to 18 sub-counties, faces a serious challenge as six of these sub-counties—Wera, Amolo, Asamuk, Ogongora, Olwa, and Abia—do not have a Health Center III. This was confirmed by Godfrey Opolot, the Amuria District Health Officer, in an interview with Radio Veritas

. He emphasized that the lack of health infrastructure in these areas is particularly concerning given the large populations residing in these sub-counties, which makes the need for health services even more pressing.

Opolot noted that the absence of these facilities is exacerbated by the district’s overall health service deficiencies. Amuria is currently facing an acute shortage of health staff, operating at only 25% staffing capacity, which significantly hampers service delivery.

This situation is worsened by poor accommodation facilities for medical personnel, further undermining efforts to provide adequate healthcare. The district is responsible for supporting a population of over 40,000 people, a task made more difficult by these constraints.

Despite these challenges, Angella Akurut, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Amuria, acknowledged the staffing and accommodation issues but reassured that the government has plans in place to address these gaps. She confirmed that efforts are underway to recruit additional medical staff to meet the growing demand for healthcare services as the population increases.

The recruitment of more healthcare workers is expected to help improve the quality of services in the district and address the shortage of medical personnel.

The situation in Amuria highlights the pressing need for both better healthcare infrastructure and adequate staffing to ensure that the growing population has access to essential medical services.
