4M tons of fruits to be purchased from Teso Framers

The Soroti Fruit Factory has announced plans to purchase an impressive 4 million tons of fruits from farmers in the Teso sub-region. This initiative is part of the factory’s strategy to increase production and expand its market for TEJU juice, a popular beverage. According to Richard Esogu, the procurement officer at the Soroti Fruit Factory, this large-scale purchase aims to boost the production capacity of the factory while creating new opportunities for local farmers.

Esogu further encouraged farmers in the Teso region to focus on maintaining and cultivating fruits such as oranges and mangoes, especially in the upcoming season. He emphasized the potential for farmers to not only meet local demand but also explore opportunities to partner with international markets, which could bring even greater benefits to the region. The procurement of 4 million tons of fruit is expected to generate significant economic benefits, creating jobs and promoting sustainable agriculture in the area.

Joseph Omoket, the Chairperson of the Kapujan Fruit Growers Cooperative Limited in Katakwi District, shared the positive impact that growing oranges has had on the local community. He explained that the fruit has been a game-changer for many farmers, improving their livelihoods and providing a stable source of income. The cooperative members, who initially faced challenges in their agricultural practices, have seen a significant turnaround in their financial well-being as a result of cultivating oranges. Omoket noted that they do not regret their decision to grow oranges, as the fruit has proven to be both economically valuable and rewarding.

This collaboration between the Soroti Fruit Factory and local farmers is a testament to the potential of agricultural partnerships to transform rural economies. By supporting the growth of fruit crops like oranges and mangoes, the initiative hopes to create a sustainable supply chain that benefits both farmers and the factory, while contributing to the overall development of the Teso sub-region.
