President Yoweri Museveni has defended the NRM’s 2026 general elections slogan, “Protecting the Gains as we Make a Quantitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.” According to Museveni, the NRM aims to increase Uganda’s GDP to $500 billion, building on the current $66 billion, a significant increase from $3.9 billion in 1986.

Museveni highlighted Uganda’s economic progress, noting the availability of consumer goods like sugar, paraffin, and soap, which were scarce in the 1980s. He attributed the improvement in agriculture and economic diversification to the country’s economic growth.

To escape poverty, Museveni advised Ugandans to engage in the money economy, particularly in commercial agriculture, factories, artisan economy (shops, tourism, boda bodas), and services like ICT. He cited an example of Joseph Ijala from Serere district, who earns substantial income from commercial agriculture.

Museveni also encouraged Ugandans to ensure that at least one family member is involved in a major sector to secure their financial stability.
