Parents challenged to value Education of their children.

Parents in the Teso sub-region have been urged to place a greater emphasis on the education of their children as a means of fostering future development in the region.

Lawrence Oyematum, the Chairperson of the Board of Governors at Jeressar High School in Soroti City, highlighted the importance of education as the key to success. He stressed that parents must recognize education as a vital tool for their children’s growth and the community’s advancement.

Oyematum made these remarks during a prayer dedication ceremony for 387 Senior Six candidates of Jeressar High School ahead of the upcoming Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations, scheduled to begin next Monday.

“It is crucial for parents to value education as the gateway to a better future. Education is the foundation upon which we build our success, and it is the only key to unlocking opportunities for our children in this region,” Oyematum said. He also emphasized the need to keep God’s name at the center of all endeavors, urging students to uphold moral integrity during their exams to avoid unnecessary temptations.

“The name of God should be honored in everything we do on this earth. This will guide the students to stay focused and resist the distractions that often arise during examination periods,” he added.

Berthal Asekenye, the headteacher of Jeressar High School, echoed Oyematum’s sentiments, acknowledging that it is the school’s priority to dedicate the learners to God before they sit for their exams, in keeping with the school’s motto, “God Our Hope.”

Asekenye also encouraged parents to actively support their children’s well-being during the upcoming holidays, urging them to promote good behavior and steer their children away from harmful habits such as alcohol consumption and negative peer influence.

“Parents must play an active role in shaping their children’s future, especially during the holiday break. It’s important that they foster good values and ensure their children stay on the right path,” Asekenye said.

Some of the Senior Six candidates, who spoke to this website, expressed their gratitude for the support they have received from both their parents and the school. They pledged to work hard and produce excellent results as a way of showing appreciation for the investment made in their education.

“We are determined to achieve good results to honor our parents and the school management for all their efforts in supporting us through our studies,” said one candidate.
