21 Pilgrims From Abeko Parish Begin Foot Journey to Namugongo for Martyrs Day Celebrations

SOROTI Uganda : A team of 21 pilgrims from St James the Apostle Catholic Parish Abeko in Soroti Catholic Diocese has embarked on a pilgrimage on foot to Namugongo ahead of the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for June 3, 2026, at the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine Namugongo.
The pilgrims began their journey yesterday from Abeko Catholic Parish and made their first stopover at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Soroti City. Today, the group is expected to proceed to St Joseph Catholic Parish Ngora via Kyere-Aguu for another rest stop.
According to the team leader, Alex Eboku, this is the group’s first pilgrimage on foot to Namugongo. He noted that the pilgrims are determined and hopeful of reaching Namugongo on May 30, 2026, ahead of the national celebrations.
Eboku said the journey is aimed at strengthening their faith, praying for God’s guidance, and joining fellow Christians from across the country in honoring the Uganda Martyrs.
Among the pilgrims is 69-year-old catechist Adiriano Egudu Ayogan, who described the journey as a spiritual sacrifice and an opportunity to renew his faith despite the physical challenges involved.
Some of the pilgrims who spoke to our reporter said they chose to walk to Namugongo as an act of devotion, thanksgiving, and prayer for their families and the nation. They expressed confidence that with faith and determination, they will successfully complete the long journey.
